Gemma King

Dr Gemma King is a Lecturer in French Studies at the Australian National University. Her research focuses on contemporary French cinema, investigating the rise of multilingual film in France and the relationship between language use and social power. She also works on Francophone cinemas (particularly from Québec), French museums, postcolonial studies and the relationship between violence, culture and power in cinema more generally. Her writing has been published in Contemporary French Civilization, the Australian Journal of French Studies, French Cultural Studies, Linguistica Antverpiensia and Francosphères, as well as in numerous edited volumes. Her first book Decentring France: Multilingualism and Power in Contemporary French Cinema was published with Manchester University Press in 2017 and she is currently writing the contracted monograph Jacques Audiard for Manchester’s French Film Directors series.
